Colvin testified that his state police dismissal was because of poor attitude and bad paper work, Sherrer said. Sherrer said he was pleased with the verdict, but was a little disappointed more money wasn't awarded for physical and emotional damages. Friends may call at Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Benedict Church in West Charleston at 1 1 a.m. Monday by the Rev. Ernest Passero.

RUSSELL C. SMYLE SAN ANTONIO, TexasWI-NOOSKI Russell C. Smyle, 72, died at his home March 10, 1993, of heart failure. He was born March 19, 1920, in Winooski, and married Justine Whalen of Burlington in 1944. They had six children.

Smyle was a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army and served his country more than 25 years. He also worked as business manager for the Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio. He served a tour of duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II, Europe, and along the 38th Parallel in Korea in the 1950s. Smyle also was a member of the intelligence corps during the Cuban Missile Crisis. His military career reaped Smyle many awards and recognition.

He was born in Stowe, March 30, 1919, the son of Fernando and, Vinnie (Stowell) Buron. Ralph was employed by the Stoware Studios for many years. He later became custodian of the Oakley Memorial Building in Stowe until ill health forced him to retire.

Ralph was an active member of the Stowe Community Church, where he served as head usher for many years, as well as serving on various boards and committees. He was active with the Stowe Historical Society and was a member of Mystic Lodge, One of Ralph's greatest assets was being a devoted friend to many community members, always available to provide a helping hand as needed. Ralph is survived by two nephews, Frank Bedell Jr. and his wife, Reba, of Stowe, and Edmund St. Peter of Winooski; two nieces, Janet Ternest and her husband, John, of Longmont, and Ruth Bombardier and her husband, Albert, of Milton; a grand-niece, Jacquelyn Zeigler and her husband, Ken; and a grandne-phew, John Ternest cousins Walter Rivers, Evelyn Adams, Doris Ecrement, Sally LaBell, Eduar-do VanBuron, and Irene Beaulac; and a very dear friend, Freda Bartlett of Stowe.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Stowe Community Church. Spring interment will be in Riverbank Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his memory be made to the Stowe Rescue Squad, Stowe Community Church, or the Vermont Lung Association, 30 Farrell South Burlington, 05403. MILTON KIRBY RIPTON Milton Kirby, 86, died Wednesday, March 17, 1993, in Starr Farm Nursing Home in Burlington. Mr. Kirby was born in Ripton, Jan. 27, 1907, the son of William and Lucinda (Barney) Kirby. He had worked for himself and for Bread Loaf Campus in maintenance and janitorial service.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews. There will be no services as he wished to be cremated and his ashes spread among the foothills of Ripton. Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury is carrying out his wishes. EMILY EMMA LABRECQUE WEST CHARLESTON Emily Emma Labrecque, 79, passed away unexpectedly at her home Thursday, March 18, 1993. She was born in Passumpsic, May 25, 1913, the daughter of George and Emma (Arguoin) Des-rochers.

She and her husband, Paul, lived in St. Johnsbury until 1950, at which time they moved to West Charleston where they operated South Burlington on Jan. 18; pleaded innocent. Robert W. Barbour, 20, Essex Junction charged with first-degree arson in Burlington on Oct.

A funeral Mass was celebrated March 15, 1993, in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church by Archbishop Patrick Flores, assisted by Bishops Bernard Popp, Charles Grauman, Bernard Collins, Vicar Generals Raymond Garcia, George Steuben, Lawrence Steuben, and William Martin, Reverends Leon P. In attendance were former employees of Lowell and Austin Plumbing and Heating Burlington Lodge 100, First Congregational Church of Burlington, Green Mountain Barber Shop Chorus, SPEBSQSA, the Old Smoothies Quartet, Green Mountain Echoes, and barbershoppers from throughout New England. Bearers were Mark Austin, Edward Bectel, Andrew Buchanan, Charles Church, Robert Currier, and John Carpenter. Ushers were Karl Ashline, James Breen, Mark Lacharite, Linda Miller, and David Shaw. Interment will be in the spring in Lake View Cemetery. ANNA L. FARNSWORTH MONTPELIER A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 21, 1993, at 2:30 p.m. in Bethany United Church of Christ, Montpelier, for Anna L. Farnsworth, 90. She died March 18, 1993, in Central Vermont Hospital.

There will be no calling hours. Born on Aug. 7, 1902, in the ancestral farm in Royalton, she was the second child of Ethan Allen Jones and Susie (Moxley) Jones. She attended the local district elementary school, graduated from South Royalton High School in 1920, and from Bay Path Institute in Springfield, in 1922. On Aug.

7, 1922, she married Russell H. Farnsworth of Randolph Center. With her family, she was a longtime resident of Burlington, moving there in 1934. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and was the volunteer secretary for the Burlington Community Concerts for many years. She was employed as a mail teller at the Burlington Savings Bank from 1953 until her retirement in 1972 and continued to serve the bank, on call, until 1980.

In 1984 she moved to Montpelier where she was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ and was active in the Montpelier Senior Citizens Center. Most recently she was a resident of Isabellas Retirement Home in Barre. Her husband, Russell, died in December 1979. Survivors include her daughter, Anne DeVaughn, and son, Harlan R. Farnsworth of Montpelier; her brother, Robert Jones of Royalton; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Death Notices and DONALD R. BESSETTE SR. Donald R. Bessette Sr. of Burlington died in the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont on March 18, 1993.

He was born Feb. 27, 1918, the son of Paul and Emma (Mongeon) Bessette. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Philippines. He was a member of VFW Post 782, and a life member of DAV. He retired from Cross Baking Co.

in Montpelier and Farrell Distributing Co. Donald was the husband of Dorothy (Mills) Bessette, who survives him. They were married 51 years. He is also survived by his son, Donald R. Bessette of St.

Thomas, Virgin Islands; his daughter, Deborah Bierstock of Rhine-beck, N.Y.; three granddaughters, Stacey of Arlington, and Melissa and Sarah Bierstock of Rhinebeck; two brothers, Earl and Harold Bessette; three sisters, Geraldine Varricchione, Beulah Delibac, and Janet Hale; his stepmother, Helena S. Bessette; a stepbrother, David Simonds; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Douglas, in March 1985; a brother, Norman Bessette; and a sister, Eileen Riley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St.

05401. MARGARET J. O'BRIEN WINOOSKI Margaret J. O'Brien, a longtime resident of Winooski, died Friday, March 19, 1993, after a long illness. She was born in Winooski, Nov.

18, 1900, the daughter of Edward and Ellen (McGreevey) O'Brien. She graduated from Winooski High School, Class of 1918. She was employed by the Singer Sewing Machine Co. in Bridgeport, for 15 years. She returned to Winooski in 1933 and was employed as a secretary for the American Woolen Mills until the mill closed in 1955.

She was a member of St. Stephen's parish in Winooski. Margaret was a gentle, kind person with a subtle, Irish sense of humor. She enjoyed frequent trips to Ireland in her later years. She is survived by one brother, Ret.

Col. William O'Brien, USMC, and his wife, Lillian, of Chatsworth, three nephews and their wives, Dr. Robert E. and Shirley O'Brien of Winooski, Attorney J. William and Phyllis O'Brien of Winooski, and William Michael and Virginia O'Brien of Burlington; four nieces, Mrs.

Al (Ruth Shee-han) Brown of Forest, Mrs. Patricia O'Brien Swanson and Mrs. Rosemary O'Brien Bennett, both of Hartford, and Mrs. John (Christine Flynn) Leitrim of Ireland; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, John Edward and Yvonne O'Brien; two sisters, Ella Mae O'Brien and Anna O'Brien Shee-han; one nephew, Dr.

Thomas O'Brien. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be in the spring in St.

Hella, 85, passed away at his home Thursday afternoon, March 18, 1993, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Turku, Finland, Sept. 17, 1907, the son of the late Amanda (Junnila) Hella and Oskar Hella.

At a very early age he came to America, graduating from Proctor High School and later moving to Rutland where he graduated from Rutland Business College. Ero was employed by the Rutland Railroad for 33 years and later worked at Ayerst Medical Laboratory in Rouses Point, N.Y., retiring in 1972. Following his retirement, Ero was co-owner and silent partner of Sport About Sporting Goods in Essex Junction. He was well-known in Masonic circles. He was past master of Friendship Lodge 24 in Charlotte, a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of York Rite Bodies of Burlington, the Vermont Council of Thrice Illustrious Masters, Grand Com-mandery of Knights Templar and Appendant Orders of the State of Vermont, Past Masters Association of the 5th Masonic District of Vermont, and Cairo Temple in Rutland.

In 1938, he married the former Leitha M. Gilbert, the love of his life and constant companion, who predeceased him Nov. 8, 1992. He is survived by one son, William E. Hella, and his beloved daughter-in-law, Judith A.

Hella of Essex Junction; two grandsons, whom he adored, Christopher Hella and his wife, Jacqueline, of Essex Junction, and William Hella and his wife, J'aime, of Burlington; two sisters and one brother, Carl Hella and Rauhau Wirta of Osprey, and Hellin Carlson of Rutland; and three nieces whom he cherished, Carlene Bennette, Hellin Leclair, and Cindy Ladabouche. Ero will be best remembered for his Scandinavian traditions, hunting, fishing, and his love of the outdoors. His life touched the hearts of many and he will be sadly missed. Friendship Lodge 24, will conduct its ritualistic funeral service at 3 p.m. Sunday in Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant Essex Junction, with visiting hours from 1 p.m.

Norton, 67, passed away unexpectedly Thursday evening, March 18, 1993, in the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, with his family at his side, following a short illness. Stuart was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Swansea, where he was raised by his grandparents, Milton and Nellie Davis. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.

He was a member of VFW Post 758 in St. Albans. Stuart was an avid reader; he also loved tending his garden and cooking. He had been employed by Beauregard Equipment, retiring in 1988. Stuart is survived by his wife of AUCTION Alburg Auction House March 20 2 p.m.
